Shankar was born on December 24, 1978, and earned the nickname "Robo Shankar" for his expertise in robot dance performance for stage shows at villages. Painting himself silver and adding mimicry with humor, he enthralled the audience since childhood. He entered the world of Tamil entertainment through the popular reality show Kalakka Povathu Yaaru in Star Vijay, which introduced a number of aspiring comedians to the industry.

Robo Shankar later joined films and left an indelible mark in movies like Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara (2013) and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014). His presence alongside Dhanush in Maari (2015) got him critical appreciation, with critics raving over his talent to "steal the show" with quick one-liners and energetic expressions. His knack again resurfaced in movies like Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, Singam 3, and Viswasam and found a special place in the hearts of millions of fans.

Apart from acting, Shankar's versatility also displayed itself in dubbing. Over the years, he garnered a net worth of between 5 to 6 crore rupees, a testament to his success on screen as well as in investment.

Even though his work is recalled, Shankar suffered severe illness in recent years, battling liver and kidney ailments and undergoing treatment for jaundice for months. While working on a film on September 17, 2025, he collapsed and was rushed to a Chennai hospital. The Tamil film fraternity made emotional tributes, with Kamal Haasan writing a moving Tamil poem in his memory, and director Venkat Prabhu calling his death a "great loss." Radhika Sarathkumar remembered him for his incessant hard work and infectious sense of humor.
